Thorfinna's Bardic Directory / Colyne's Bardic Directory / Links and Resources

Greetings, good gentles, and welcome to our small estate. Here, you can learn about the SCA ("Just what is it anyway?"), about us ("Who's Thorfinna grafeldr? Colyne Stewart?"), a bit about SCA Arts & Sciences ("You mean you make stuff?"), divisions of the Knowne World ("Geography?!"),  and Links and Resources to help you create your own SCA persona, design your device, learn the slang and generally get into the swing of the SCA.

So, what the heck is the SCA?

The SCA is the Society for Creative Anachronism. Basically what that means is, we're a group of people with various levels of interest in the Medieval Period (generally agreed to be between 600 and 1600 CE) who get together in garb (most don't like to call it costume!) and have fun. At an SCA event you'll likely find heavy fighting (yes, some of us put on armour and hit each other with rattan swords; that's how our kings are chosen!), archery, fencing, bardic circles (singing, story recitation, drumming, etc) as well as many other activities, ranging from juggling to dancing, from swigging homemade mead to embroidery.

Why do I keep seeing all these weird names? What is Ealdormere?

The SCA is a worldwide organization, so it has been divided up into numerous kingdoms. Most of Ontario is in the Kingdom of Ealdormere. If you want more information, check out the main SCA page, the Ealdormere webpage, and our Knowne World pages. Also, one of the members of Ealdormere's populace, Mistress Marian of Heatherdale, has written a song detailing Ealdormere's history. We urge every newcomer to Ealdormere to listen to this song. If it doesn't make you proud to be Ealdormerean, nothing will.

You have to have garb? I can't sew!

Neither can Colyne. A lot of SCA folk can't, though most learn after being in the group for a while. If its your first event there is a very easy all-purpose non-period specific garb you can make. Grab some leather shoes (the plainer the better, and without laces), some grey or black jogging pants (without elastic around the ankles) and long or short-sleeved shirt without collar or buttons (untucked) and a belt over the shirt. Voila! You're now Medieval looking, and that's what counts. You can worry about creating a more period specific set of garb later.

You keep using the term period. What does that mean?

You can see the Lexicon for an answer to this. However, since its a pretty important question, I'll put a definition here. Most people in the SCA chose a persona, that is, a character from sometime throughout history. This CANNOT be a real person (sorry, no Joan of Arcs allowed). This person will be from a specific time and place in the Medieval world. (Pretty much anywhere in the world. I've seen lots of Eastern and Japanese personas.) So, after choosing a persona, people try to get their garb to match what was worn in that time and place. Its not as hard as it sounds. There are lots of resources available to help you, and we'll be adding them to our Links and Resources page.

So how do I join?

It's easy. Check out our Knowne World pages to find an SCA group near you. Contact them, and they'll give you all the help you'll need. (Don't forget to also check out the SCA webpage.)

If you're starting out in the Canton of Ardchreag, view their newcomer's page. The Barony of Septentria also has a newcomer's page.
